03-16-03: The Coming War

Tomorrow the U.N will be faced with the decision of voting up or down, the 19th U.N Resolution concerning the disarmament of Iraq. France has vowed to veto ANY proposal by the United States, Britain, and Spain, even with a majority vote by the Security Council. The following day, Tuesday or possibly later Wednesday, the President will speak to the nation of his decision to go to war against Iraq. Anytime from Tuesday to Friday night, the U.S Military will begin to attack with Cruise Missles and strikes from Air Force and Naval Aircraft. American and British sons and daughters will be in harms way. Regardless of your political views as to whether the war is the right thing or not, I expect all Americans to except the reality and support our troops in the field. It is the right thing to do.

i will have to disagree with you TPS, i dont think any of us know enough to say "oh its about oil" or "oh they just have very large wooden sticks up thier asses and need to get off the war mongering" because in all actuallity we dont know jack, we know some but not enough to make educated guesses as to why this war will happen or not happen, you really think the UN, US and other countries would just give out information that was important, knowing that the media is watched by every one including the enemy?! think about what your saying, and im not directing this soley at you TPS, mostly at those who believe they know everything as to why we are going to war, and others who would like to call bush a raging homosexual with cock pleasing disorder, he may not be liked, but hes doing somthing that we all know needs to be done and he has quite large testicals to go about it in the way he has. and it doesnt matter if i like bush or not, because the people of my country chose him as our best leader and if the majority says so, then he must be doing something right. iraq has been a threat not only to the US but to many other countries. are we just supposed to sit around while a known mad man creates nuclear, biological, and other forms of mass destruction in his basement? eventually they would of made somthing that could reach us right in the heart, many of you near to him should know that your countries are in high danger from anything he has, seeing how most of it could reach you. thats just my opinion though.

which is closer to Iraq? HOLLAND or the USA?Holland is i believe, but holland is not involed in the war sad to say, if we(USA) do not do anything to "disarm" iraq, we'd be having a good old nuclear war coming up in a year or 2, Iraq could try to take over countries threaten to nuke them if they dont give their land up, mean while we'd be sitting back doing dittly shit, would u like that? Maybe Holland can go disarm iraq if they wanted too, i wanna c that happen, maybe i can then say "Holland is fucking up the world man, FUCK HOLLAND" but no

anyways........ cya in a week or 2 when this "war" is over

I believe one of the objectives of the war is to get Saddam out of power. This guy is insane. According to a story I heard on the news, a lady kindly asked Saddam to release her husband from prison, because he had been put there wrongfully. Saddam returned him to his wife.......in ten pieces, and charged her for the ammunition that was used to kill him with. This war is about far more than oil. Saddam has refused to show proof that he has disarmed and destroyed all his weapons of mass destruction. Hes like a ticking time bomb, if someone doesnt do something about him soon, we will be faced with more 9-11 events. Theres no reason to flame the US, someone had to do something about this and the US were the ones who stepped forward.

Does anyone care about the estimated 500,000 Iraqis that will lose their lives in this war? No. Yet you'd see it as a tragedy if a few Americans lose their lives in this war. Is that because Americans are "better"? Is that because the Iraqis deserve what they're gonna get? Certainly not.

As for the US providing reasons for this war, yes, they do have to justify it. Yes, they do have to release all information regarding the reasoning of this war to the public. You can't expect people to just sit back and trust the government, especially Mr. Bush. That's the entire point of a democratic government, so people can decide for themselves whether this war is justified. Releasing information as to why the US wants to go to war will in no way give the Iraqis information that they didn't know already.

All the evidence that the US has of Iraq having weapons of mass destruction has been presented already. There is absolutely no reason for them to withold any of it from the public, since it would only aid in persuading them towards war. In fact, much of the evidence the US has provided has proved to be false. For example, the US claimed Iraq had purchased Uranium from Niger, when it was proven that all documents indicating so were forged. But the US apparently didnt know they were forged, and blamed the forgery on Iraqi enemies in the Middle East. The truth is that the US government doesn't know much more than the US public does. They are prepared to act purely on speculation. 500,000+ Iraqi lives, a couple American lives is a very steep price to pay to find out whether the threat is real or not... especially now that weapons inspectors are having success. Iraq has disarmed many of the missles that the UN claims go beyond legal range, and they have said that they will begin destroying stockpiles of Anthrax within a week.

It is also very disguisting how much harassment the French are recieving regarding this issue, when in fact, most of the international community is opposed to a war. France, Russia, and China have all threatened to veto, meaning 3 of the 5 permanent security council members strongly oppose a war, as does Germany, Canada, Mexico, and many many more. Not only that, but many of the countries who support a war are only doing so to better relations with the US. Australia has openly declared that "relationship with the US is more important."

The US has also resorted to bribery to gain support. They've offered "care packages" to countries such as Turkey if they support their war effort. I can only imagine that they've bribed the 3 African countries on the security council, which is why they're so confident in their support.

Now they've resorted to harassing the French. The latest incident with the Freedom Fries is purely disguisting. It's starting to sound like a kindergarden argument. "If you dont do what I say I wont be your friend!"

The scary thing about this is that if the US goes into Iraq withouth the UN support, they've basically destroyed any integrity that the UN had. The reason the League of Nations failed is because the US was not a part of it. I'd hate to see the UN suffer the same fate.

Remember, the only weapons of mass destruction that the 9/11 terrorists had were plastic knives and box cutters. Hatred and Resentment are not things that you can kill with guns and bombs. This war will not eliminate any threat, in fact it will do the complete opposite.

who says half a million iraqis will lose their lives? its their choice to fight or not or maybe surrender like in the first war, or flee to other countries

and the kurds have already started to flee to other countries *cough*from the scuds(weapons of mass destruction which one of the iraqi units have) which did not caused 5000 deaths in the first war?*cough*

whats wrong with using bribery to gain support?
and if this war does the complete oppsite then another war will follow until these people get it through their fucking skulls

I find it ironic that you accuse the U.S of starting a war based on speculation, yet you speculate on your own that 500,000 Iraqi civilians will perish in the war. You cannot possibly know the future. This is not going to be a typical war. The U.S is not going to destroy infrastructure, which is typically where most civilian casualties originate. You also speculate that most of the international community is against the war, yet more than thirty nations support the U.S.
You also speculate that they only support the U.S because the U.S offered "care packages" or whatever. You say that France is recieving undue harassment over their anti-war stance. Russia, China, and Germany, while they don`t support the war, are not actively trying to bribe other Security Council members to vote against the U.S like France has been. MORE SPECULATION.

Second, your statement about Iraq trying to obtain weapons grade Uranium from Niger is correct, however taken out of context. There is proven documentation that Iraq tried to obtain Uranium from many countries.

Third, you said Iraq has stated they will now start destroying Anthrax, while I have not heard that report anywhere, I do believe that should have been included in the Iraqi weapons report.

The plain simple fact is that U.N said if Iraq didn`t disarm by such and such a date, that force would be used, it has been said for 12 years. That hasnt happened. So, the U.S is finished looking silly and will act while the U.N will not.

From David Ensor
CNN Washington Bureau
Friday, March 14, 2003 Posted: 3:40 PM EST (2040 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Intelligence documents that U.S. and British governments said were strong evidence that Iraq was developing nuclear weapons have become a source of embarrassment after U.N. weapons inspectors dismissed them as forgeries.

The documents, given to International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Mohamed ElBaradei, indicated that Iraq might have tried to buy 500 tons of uranium from Niger, but the agency said they were "obvious" fakes.

The discovery raises questions such as why the apparent forgeries were given to inspectors and why U.S. and British intelligence agents did not recognize that they were not authentic.

"I'm sure the FBI and CIA must be mortified by this because it is extremely embarrassing to them," former CIA official Ray Close said.

Responding to questions about the documents from lawmakers, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell said, "It was provided in good faith to the inspectors and our agency received it in good faith, not participating ... in any way in any falsification activities."

Sources said that one of the documents was a letter discussing the uranium deal supposedly signed by Niger President Tandja Mamadou. The sources described the signature as "childlike" and said that it clearly was not Mamadou's.

Another, written on paper from a 1980s military government in Niger, bears the date of October 2000 and the signature of a man who by then had not been foreign minister of Niger in 14 years, sources said.

"The IAEA has concluded, with the concurrence of outside experts that these documents -- which formed the basis for the reports of recent uranium transactions between Iraq and Niger -- are not in fact authentic," ElBaradei said in his March 7 presentation to the U.N. Security Council.

Close said the CIA should have known better.

"They have tremendously sophisticated and experienced people in their technical services division, who wouldn't allow a forgery like this to get by," Close said. "I mean it's just mystifying to me. I can't understand it."

A U.S. intelligence official said that the documents were passed on to the International Atomic Energy Agency with the comment, " 'We don't know the provenance of this information, but here it is.' "

If a mistake was made, a U.S. official suggested, it was more likely due to incompetence.

"That's a convenient explanation, but it doesn't satisfy me," Close said. "Incompetence I have not seen in those agencies. I've seen plenty of malice, but I've never seen incompetence."

But the question remains -- who is responsible for the apparent forgeries?

Experts said the suspects include the intelligence services of Iraq's neighbors and other pro-war nations as well as Iraqi opposition groups.

Most rule out the United States or Great Britain because they said those countries' intelligence services would have been able to make much more convincing forgeries if they had chosen to do so.

President Bush even highlighted the documents in his State of the Union address on January 28.

"The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa," Bush said.

U.S. officials said that the assertion by the president and British government was also based on additional evidence of Iraqi efforts to obtain uranium from another African country. But officials would not say which nation.

Still no proof that he is a real threat to us at this point in time.....and even worse are we being lied to be our government?

Saddam has to go, period, I agree with that.

He's got 48 hours to get out, but his oldest son stated that they will stay (was on the news:P)

So, they are not Bush' friends anymore! They must go, they're not sweet, come on, let's kill off the entire country!

The U.S. has enough technology and capabilities to drop a well-placed bomb right in Sadam's coffee-cup, after that let the people vote democratically (as far as real democracy exists, but that's another discussion:P) and resurrect their economy by buying oil.

An over-simplified statement of course, but it sure beats "I don't like you, so I kill your country"

Right now I am very afraid for the lives of millions across the face of the earth... In the end I fear Bush is leading us into WWIII, with the UK, the US and the rest of our allies vs the rest of the world... I have a few friends in the military and from what I'm told things may go bad very fast. If things do go bad very fast I believe I will sign up for military service. Fun, eh?

I take no credit for this but I feel the need to share it.............

Last week, the Shelby County, Alabama, Legislative Delegation hosted a
"Stand Up for America Rally." More than 1,200 people
attended, including featured speakers Chief Justice Roy Moore, Adjutant
General Mark Bowen and Alabama State Auditor Beth
Chapman.

Attached is a copy of Mrs. Chapman's speech, which resulted in five standing ovations, tremendous applause and an encore. It's a short read and well worth it.

I hope you enjoy it as we continue to "Stand up for America!"

* * * * * * * * * * * *

"I'm here tonight because men and women of the United States military have given their lives for my freedom. I am not here tonight because Sheryl Crowe, Rosie O'Donnell, Martin Sheen, George Clooney, Jane Fonda or Phil Donahue, sacrificed their lives for me.

If my memory serves me correctly, it was not movie stars or musicians, but the United States Military who fought on the shores of Iwo Jima, the jungles of Vietnam, and the beaches of Normandy.

Tonight, I say we should support the President of the United States and the U.S. Military and tell the liberal, tree-hugging,
Birkenstock-wearing, hippie, tie-dyed liberals to go make their movies and music and whine somewhere else.

After all, if they lived in Iraq, they wouldn't be allowed the freedom of speech they're being given here today. Ironically, they would be put to death at the hands of Sadam Husssein or Osama Bin Laden. I want to know how the very people who are against
war because of the loss of life, can possibly be the same people who are for abortion?

They are the same people who are for animal rights but against the rights of the unborn.

The movie stars say they want to go to Iraq and serve as "human shields" for the Iraqis. I say let them buy a one-way ticket and go.

No one likes war. I hate war! But the one thing I hate more is the fact that this country has been forced into war. Innocent people have lost their lives, and there but for the grace of God it could have been my brother, my husband, or even worse my own son.

On December 7, 1941, there are no records of movie stars treading the blazing waters of Pearl Harbor.

On September 11, 2001; there are no photos of movie stars standing as "human shields" against the debris and falling bodies descending from the World Trade Center. There were only policemen and firemen; underpaid civil servants who gave their all
with nothing expected in return.

When the USS Cole was bombed, there were no movie stars guarding the ship. Where were the human shields then?

If America's movie stars want to be human shields, let them shield the gang-ridden streets of Los Angeles, or New York City. Let them shield the lives of the children of North Birmingham whose mothers lay them down to sleep on the floor each night to shelter
them from stray bullets.

If they want to be human shields, I say let them shield the men and women of honesty and integrity that epitomizes courage and embody the spirit of freedom by wearing the proud uniforms of the United States military. Those are the people who have earned
and deserve shielding!

Throughout the course of history, this country has remained free, not because of movie stars and liberal activists, but because of brave men and women who hated war too. However, they laid down their lives so that we all may live in freedom. After all, "What greater love hath no man, that he lay down his life for his friend," or, in this case, a country.

We should give our military honor and acknowledgment and not let their lives be in vain. If you want to see true human shields,
walk through Arlington Cemetery. There lie human shields, heroes, and the BRAVE Americans who didn't get on television and
talk about being a human shield; they were human shields.

I thank God tonight for freedom, those who bought and paid for it with their lives in the past, those who will protect it in the
present and defend it in the future.

America has remained silent too long! God-fearing people have remained silent too long!

We must lift our voices united in a humble prayer to God for guidance and the strength and courage to sustain us throughout whatever the future may hold.

After the tragic events of Sept. 11th, my then eleven-year-old son said terrorism is a war against them and us and if you're not
one of us, then you're one of them.

So, in closing tonight, let us be of one accord, let us stand proud, and let us be the human shields of prayer, encouragement and support for the President, our troops and their families and our country.

May God bless America, the land of the free, the home of the brave and the greatest country on the face of this earth! "

Something to ponder................

Apparently it was during the 1st Gulf war, when the US bombed dozens of oil tankers and other trucks because they thought they were scuds.

As for speculating the cost of the war, I never said 500,000 civilians will lose their lives, I said around 500,000 Iraqis will lose their lives, civilian or military. In the 1st Gulf War, according to cnn ( http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2001/gulf.war/facts/gulfwar/ ) 100,000 Iraqis died, 300,000 wounded, and all the US did was drive them out of Kuwait. This time the goal will be to defeat Saddam's reigime, therefore the casualties will inevitably be higher. yes, 500,000 was speculation, but the casualties will certainly be in the hundreds of thousands.

And no, it is not their choice. These people have a level of honor which is certainly unmatched in Western countries. They believe in what they are fighting for, and are willing to die for it. You can just say that they had the chance to surrender and use that as justification for murdering them, when surrender is not an option for them.

it honestly brings me to the verge of tears knowing how mindless we can be.

Novermber 11th.. does anyone even consider this day anymore? it was designed to remind us of something. figure it out.

Just turn off your TVs for 1 second and think. just think. its not that hard. people are going to die. and we have learned nothing from the past. and we are responsible.

i feel sick.

Thats news to me.
Free speech in the states....thats a laugher. Only free speech is that which the establishment wants to hear.

Abortion?
How the hell does abortion have to do with anything anyways?

I think not.

I guess any Iraqi's are quite honourable since they will probably being layind down their lives for their country.

I guess so where the Vietnamese back in the day.

So is everyone honourable?

Or, is it just those who died for AMERICAN IDEALS?

I have sat back for the most part and observed these responses with great interest.

Yes, I'm all for going in there and doing whats right.

On the other hand I respect my fellow players and their opinions.

One thing I have noticed though is the lack of research or at least verifiable facts that some state.

I ran across this article on MSNBC from newsweek. http://www.msnbc.com/news/885222.asp?0cl=c1

If the link doesn't work goto MSNBC.com and select the tab on the left labeled NEWS -> NEWSWEEK -> COVER: The arrogant Empire

I found it to be equally fair when presenting both sides of the issue.

I highly recommend that all of you read it with an open mind then we'll talk.

DOC, about that text, so far I've read only a small part of it, and something comes to mind, it states America as a "whole" as one thing, while even in your country the opinions are divided, with no actual numbers on who is pro-war and who is against, simply because that would terminate the propaganda attack which seems to be going on.

On the other hand, countries as Great Britain are described as: "Look at the few countries that do publicly support us. Tony Blair bravely has forged ahead even though the vast majority of the British people disagree with him...."

That's the case in EVERY country. Most of the people are against war, but the leaders (with Bush as our main example of ignorance) FORCE it upon us. Where has democracy gone??? Let America vote, let Europe vote, let the PEOPLE vote for or against a war.

Or maybe we should threaten America to give up its nucleair capability, biological and chemical researches. You're screaming the loudest about "insane leaders with terrible weapons of mass destruction"..... I can name one for you. :x

Now I'll read the rest of it on a rainy Dutch Sunday afternoon :P

I believe the only or the main reason that American is acting so hurriedly is because they know that Iraq doesnt posses any means to attack America atm, and that they want to attack IRAQ b4 IRAQ develops the capability to attack the US. This isnt minority report; the world doesnt work that way.

US had already made up their minds that they're going to attack IRAQ, even if the UN weapons inspectors found nothing. And thats what happened, the weapons inspectors found nothing that should constitute a war.

Everyone feels that Nt.Korea is a bigger threat to the US than IRAQ, but yet Mr.Bush decides to go attack IRAQ, whilst Nt.Korea is openly developing and bettering their weapons. US is acting like a school yard bully, they wont dare attack someone that will fight back, only attack those who wont/ cant fight back. if IRAQ had some WMD that could reach America, US wouldnt dare attack IRAQ atm.

Its so ironic how the Americans believe that they are fighting this war because they're going to liberate IRAQ from Sadam, or that ppl are treated badly in IRAQ or whatever. If the American ppl did some of their own research into the matter, rather than rely on CNN (who act as a propaganda machine for the Bush administration), ull find that IRAQ is among a very few in that region that follow the same ideals that Americans such as religious freedom and non-discrimination. you'll see that countries in that region are alot more backward than IRAQ.

Just now the bombing has started, its a real injustice, I hope America will be taught a harsh lesson in this war.

That "speech" that saddam just gave on the iraq television network was bs in my opinion. The US had a lot of intelligence supporting the fact that they killed 5 key leaders (including saddam) in that first strike with 40+ missiles. I believe that the speech was recorded earlier, and saddam died in the attack. Iraq just wants to scare us and try to show us that he is still out there. That speech was waaaaaaaay too generic for the situation. Also, the broadcast had many glitches, that one reporter said, you would get from a tape. I know Im jumping to conclusions based on very little information, you dont have to flame me for that, Im just stating my current opinion.

A CNN report concluded he is MOST LIKELY alive since he left the date in the video.

But again,
Who cares.
If their is war, the best thing would be Sadam dying and no one else.

Doc,
There is no way the US can justify this war. There is a reason why the largest peace protest in the world just took place. The bottom line is the people do not want this war. Look at the polls....In the UK a clear majority does not want the war, a protest of 1.5 million people support no war. Yet, Tony Blair persists in his support of the war.

Same goes for the US, look at the protests that took place in New York in upwards of 750,000.

Bottom line, the people don't want war and their governments are misrepresenting them.

A corruption of the democratic process

I am happy that my leaders have stated and went against the need for war in IRAQ because I know thats how a majority of people I know feel.

Stop spouting 1960's right wing bullshit.

Social activism is not Marxist, and that is besides the point.

And I guess the Vietnam Vets of America are a communist puppet.

BTW,
Communism does not equal Marxism; communism was a sharade of the true meaning and nature of Marxism.

oh and the protesters seem to not care where the money comes tsk tsk talk about cattle...

Cattle?
More like the opposite, they are the ones questioning their leadership and asking one simple question.

What purpose does this war serve?
Who's interest benefits from this war?

1--> Freeing the slaves?.....WOW thats news to me. Did the slaves revolt and win their freedom?

Oh, I get it.
Your talking about American history alone and slavery in the states?

I guess thats typical of the self-absorbed and self-important ways of americans.

2--->Stopping the Holocaust?

Yah, thats why it took the US X number of years to enter WWII. Thats why every nation let the atrocities go on and did not get involved till they where attacked.

The atrocities where a product of WWII, they did not produce WWII.

3--->Ending Facisim in Japan.

Facisim would have existed and continued to if the Japanese had been smart and not attacked the US.

But they started the war, the US finished it.

SO i guess this is kinda true.

Keep in mind, ridding facisim was not the goal. Revenge for Pearl Harbour was the goal.

4--->Ridding the world of communism?

Communism still exists in the world today.
And what war ridded the world of communism????

5---->Liberating the United States from UK rule

Yah thats totally true.
Plus you Yanks hate tea.
So much tea put to waste

6---> Establishing Modern Democracy-Freedom of SPEECH, RELIGION, ASSEMBLE, and
PRESS

WRONG.

DO you even know where the whole idea of freedom of speech began?

It was not the states.
Try France.
Rule of the people.

Almost 97% of you aren't in the military, so shut up. You dont have to go ver if called up. You might not agree with the decision, but to bad, the choice isn't yours to make. All you can do is bitch whine and moan. While my ass, and any other in the military actually have to go over and do this. Shut up, it's not about your opnions, its about the good of the world. Not everyone is gonna be thrilled, but oh well, shit happens. Persoanlly I would like to see the draft re-instated so all you hippy loving faggots will cry a little more when its your ass their sending over seas away from your families to fight in a war that has nothing to do with your life. Well in my opnion at least.

1)I guess your saying anyone who is in the military supports the war? I don't think so, I know a number of members of the military that do not support it. Yet again, most of those are officers so they have a nice big brain and education behind all that brawn.

Also keep in mind, as a soldier the rules of conduct state that u follow orders that seem morale. If your commander asked you to kill 25 POW's would you? Guess what, you can't use I was following orders line because if you answered yes you are now a war criminal.

2)Actually it is about our opinions.
A democracy is the rule of the people.
Its our tax dollars that pay for the military. If the people don't want a war, their elected leaders should lead them to one. Yup thats democracy.

3) for the good of the world. I guess only those in the military and united states know what is for the good of the world.

Personally,
All anyone is saying is war sucks.
Why do we need our soldiers and theirs dying?

Its not about weapons of mass destruction, because guess what.
Korea has weapons of mass destruction.
Pakistan does also.
Both states are anti-american and have supported terrorist organizations.
Iran is just as anti-american as Iraq.

Also, its not about humanatarian rights.
China has a much worse human rights record than Iraq. I don't see Americans running to free the chinese people.

Unfortunately,
Iraq seems to be a repeat of Vietnam, in which to many americans and vitenamese lost their lives.

As the fighting intensifies in terms of its ground to ground combat the casualties for both sides can only increase.

The war is here now, and both sides will lose many people for no reason.

Keep in mind,
This war may serve a purpose, but the possible risks far outweigh any possible benefits and nothing justifies the loss of life that will be suffered.

I would not want my brother or father dying in this war, because their is no just cause for the war. I don't want my friends or family dying for one madman's dream of conquering another madman.

True Wars has no victors.z
Only the dead and the mourners survive.

Regards,
MP

PS.
Most of us hippy's would not be drafted since most of us are highly educated or in the process of attaning higher education.
College education omits you from the draft

Sure the US military are the ones going away from their families to fight, however they are not the ones paying the majority of the cost, the Iraqis are. And last I checked, the people of Iraq didn't have a say in whether their country would be attacked or not.

It isnt a question about whether someone has the courage to fight a war or not. Since when did it take courage to slaughter a virtually defenseless enemy?

Just because someone isn't in the military, doesn't mean that their opinion is any less valid. Sure it's up to you whether you wanna fight or not, but last I checked it sure wasn't up to the Iraqis whether they wanted to die or not. The war affects their lives as much as anyone else.

Plus I find it sadly ironic how self centered these pro-war arguments are, and how little consideration is payed to the well being of the Iraqi people, even though this war is being sold as something that the Iraqi people will welcome.
