Just been listening to some old school grunge.

Just wanted to say today's music blow's outside a few bands.

I mean,
Nirvana, Soundgarden, STP (stone temple pilots), AIC (alice in chains), the melvins, Pearl Jam, Metallica, Rage Against The Machine, Radiohead, Tool, Korn

I mean, ok
some of these bands are still around.
But essentially they are 1990 bands.

Where are all the new great bands?
I mean in the mainstream at least, not underground.

I mean
Blink 182 ?
Or that stupid canadian band on the spiderman soundtrack.....their name escapes me. I mean really.

Its soo revolting, I don't even touch the radio anymore.

I mean, I miss the days where all you would hear on MTV / Much music was Nirvana, Soundgarden, AIC, STP, Smashing Pumpkins

I mean, this pop style music drivel sung by a bunch of ass kissing dimwits, has infiltrated every musical gendre.

Pop is literally everywhere.

I mean Nelly?
what the fuck is that.

Give me so KRS-1, PE, Wu any day.

I suggest you download some Interpol, Walkmen, Walt Mink.

I'm not sure about mainstream.... most stuff is just garbage.

oh and not all pop music is bad.

people have this view that pop (or maintream whatever you want to call it) music was better X number of years ago. No - it wasn't, it's just that the good pop songs have lived on in people's memory. The same will happen of today's music. The sh|t will be forgotten and the good songs remembered and in 2020 everyone will be saying how much better pop music was in 2002.

Some of the early 90s stuff (AIC) was good...but now everything is shit. I don't watch tv or listen to the radio, because all the mainstream shit is just that SHIT. Check out Opeth,In Flames, Dark Tranquility, Deicide, Anathema, Down, etc.

Ok,
1stly as far as me being all remeniscent and shit.....yah ok, think what u want.

But as far as today's so called pop music being good and talented thats so full of shit and you know it.

True musicians write their own music and lyrics and i mean you actually think britney, christina, J-Lo, back street crap, N'Gay does any of that?

I mean at least back in the day, such GREAT pop bands and artists such as

The Cure
Duran Duran
Michaeal Jackson
The Police
Depech Mode

Well these all had 1 thing in common, they wrote and composed most of their music or at least a good chunk, unlike many of today's bands.

And in the words of the Hot Red Chili Willi's, its fucking good when mucians write their own music, thats GOOD music.

Thats the bottom line, cuz Militant Poet says so.

sigh

militant poet how many people 'back in the day' didn't write their own music. Loads of them...

But you're right to say that the bands who write their own music generally live on in memory...e.g.

All Saints
Take That

and i'm sure i could think of a few more if i tried.

BUT - great pop songs live on in memory too - it's just that maybe the artist won't remembered in their own right - but as the person who did a particular song . eg. "Hit me baby One more time" is a GREAT pop song.

Nobody's mentioned Prince yet! The guy writes, composes, plays, and sings almost all of his music (I think he even does some of his own choreography). As far as current musical geniuses go, he's way up there. The man produces good music and plays TONS of instruments. Listen to some of his stuff, most likely any instrumental solos are him playing, especially if it's guitar or piano.

And DandyP: Take That sucks ass :P

Lenny Kravitz all the way as far as self-sustaining multi-talented artists go.

Hit me baby one more time?
A great song?

Don't be so ..........
Its a great sex appeal video and thats about it.
Brinteny is like madonna, not so much musical talent as sex appeal and knowing how to market what she has.

Now,
Californication by the RHC is a great pop song.
Black Velvetine by Lenny
I mean, u want great pop bands or bands which could be classified in the pop arena.....

Try STP, U2, Red Hot Chili Pepers,

I mean, nothing is bad with pop.

BUT
its refreshing when artists write their own music.

And as far as All Saints, are u reall aware why they "died".

It was not a lack of musical interest, but bad dissent and outside pursuits, ie. having kids.

and i mean

ALL Saints
VS
Spice Gurls

who would u listen too?
I'll take All Saints thank u.

The good music is where ever you find it. I haven't even heard of any of the band mentioned here on this thread -- that's how old I am -- but I do listen to tons of good music. Almost none of it is new (although I really like some (definetly not all) techno, hip hop, and dance music -- TribeCalledQuest, Crystal Method and Propellerheads -- stuff like that)

I must say though, the reason I'm writing in this thread, one thing that life has taught to me is: Whenever you point a finger, you have three pointing back at you. So what this thread got me thinking is this: All you talented subspace players should maybe pick up a guitar and make the good music you're talking about -- the world can almost always use another musician (as opposed to another person who critizize music without making any.)

Peace,
C
